Crystal Mines II: Buried TreasurePosted on Thu, June 01 2006, by David Sherwin |
So, you couldn't get enough of it the first time, and needed more levels? Ok. I'm sure Carl won't mind you traversing through 100 more! One of Atari's first games for the Lynx was a modest little digging/puzzle game called Crystal Mines 2 (CM2), which was a supposed sequel (and Boulderdash ripoff) from a game that had originally appeared on the NES. Never in itself particularly notable, CM2 was always overshadowed by the more innovative (Chip's Challenge) or famous (Lemmings) entries in the Lynx puzzle library. I basically forgot about CM2 after it... [Read More] 2 Comments |
Ms. Pac-ManPosted on Mon, May 22 2006, by Ryan Genno |
Is there a version of Ms. Pac-Man that's no good? Ok, 5200 players had to deal with that non-centering stick, but if you can handle that, Ms. Pac is a blast. If you're over twenty than you most likely know about a certain arcade hit that was practically all over the place when you were younger; the game was Namco's Ms. Pac Man. Although Ms. Pac Man on the Atari 2600 was pretty good, the 5200 edition has such amazing graphics and sounds the game is almost arcade perfect. If you're just out of prison or you're Amish, here's how to play the game; make Ms. Pac Man eat all the dots on the scr... [Read More] Make the first comment! |
Return of the Jedi: Death Star BattlePosted on Mon, May 22 2006, by Darryl Brundage |
This game reminds me more of Breakout or Krull than Star Wars. Still, it's a neat game. Even if the Millennium Falcon handles a little slippery. (Someone notify Chewie.) The year was 1983. The last Star Wars movie (unless creator George Lucas was going to do episodes 7-9...or 1-3), Return of the Jedi, came out, doing huge box office business, MTV was popular (actually playing music back then), and, due to the video game crash, either tons of great games were available for really cheap, or if you bought a game that you did not like, at least you didn't pay much for it. And speaking of which, Death Star Battl... [Read More] Make the first comment! |
PolarisPosted on Tue, May 09 2006, by Ethan C. Nobles |
Sometimes, you just want to trap yourself into a small yellow submarine (why are they ALWAYS yellow?) and shoot stuff. Among Atari 2600 collectors, there's a certain appeal of finding hard-to-get games. Through the years, it's become pretty apparent to me why rare games are, quite often, so hard to find - there weren't that many of them made because they are either average as can be or downright rotten. Fortunately for those of us who like playing games more than collecting them, the best games made for the 2600 are also the most common. Polaris, relea... [Read More] Make the first comment! |
Video OlympicsPosted on Tue, May 09 2006, by Brendan Onfrichuk |
So, you didn't think Pong made an appearance on the 2600, did you? It was cleverly disguised as Video Olympics. Yes, Video Olympics is a collection of Pong games that you would normally see on a Pong dedicated console. Anybody who is anybody has played Pong before and for most people, Video Olympics is awesome. You don't need to huddle around those old Pong units that have the paddle controllers attached to the deck without any wires, just sit back and get ready for the experience that is Pong. Gamep... Forgotten WorldsPosted on Tue, April 18 2006, by Lawrence Armstrong |
Needing some serious ST blasting action? Don't have a Sega Genesis or an arcade unit at home? Then maybe you'd be interested in some Zenny? Hmmm... Forgotten Worlds on the Atari ST is top-notch quality from start to finish. The graphics are among the best on the ST. The sound effects and the music are excellent. The game play is fun and challenging. The game is for one or two players. Two players can fight together to beat the bad guys. On the title screen, you can choose the number of players and whether you want sound effects or music. The graphics in the game feature detailed spr... [Read More] 1 Comment |
Porky'sPosted on Tue, April 18 2006, by Darryl Brundage |
E.T. wasn't the only game where your player would get stuck in holes! At least E.T. could levitate out of his. In Porky's, you gotta pole vault out! First off, I know what you're thinking, and you're WRONG! I am NOT a pervert for reviewing this game. Besides, Beat 'em and Eat 'em was already reviewed on this site anyway, and CAN actually be considered x-rated, as you could actually buy Porky's over the counter when it was first released, since it was legal, whereas Custer's Revenge (another x-rated 2600 game) wasn't legal in several states. Yes, Porky's... [Read More] Make the first comment! |
Howard Scott Warshaw InterviewPosted on Wed, April 05 2006, by Brendan Onfrichuk |
Okay, it's far enough past April Fool's Day to post this. Here's a great interview with the programmer of Yars' Revenge (and other notable games which you should already know.) I recently sat down with Howard Scott Warshaw for a phone interview and he really is a man that needs no introduction. He programmed Yars' Revenge, E.T. and my favorite 2600 title Raiders of the Lost Ark. He is also the creator of the popular documentary Once Upon Atari and was around Atari for a lot of the going ons there. This is an Atari Times exclusive interview with Howard Scott Warshaw. ... Space AttackPosted on Wed, April 05 2006, by Ethan C. Nobles |
Finally! A space action game for the 2600! What? There are at least two others out there already? Why didn't anyone tell me!? One of the things that makes collecting for the Atari 2600 so much fun is that there were a lot of great games out there that were rather obscured by more popular titles in the console's huge game library. I've had Space Attack in my collection since it was a new game and was surprised to learn a lot of people haven't heard of this gem. Space Attack, released by M-Network in 1982, is a nice change of pace for Atari fans as it implements a co... [Read More] 1 Comment |
GravitarPosted on Thu, March 23 2006, by Darryl Brundage |
What do you get when you mix Asteroids with Lunar Lander? A really frickin' tough game that eat your quarters like they were Doritos. Oh boy. I'm probably gonna get it for reviewing THIS! I read somewhere (forget where, and the exact quote) that some weenie reviewer or something (who could probably only last ten seconds on this game) proclaimed this as to being the "worst game ever made." Oh, PLEASE! Just because it's difficult doesn't mean it's E.T... errr, I mean awful (there's a DIFFERENCE, people!). At an arcade that I frequented when I was young, this game saw a lot o...
