Wall DefenderPosted on Thu, October 19 2006, by LW Tisler |
Yeah, back in the "old days" they tried to come up with some new ideas. Today, it's all driving, shooting (with light guns), dancing, and fighting... There just aren't enough abstract ideas out there anymore. If you want one of those, you've gotta reach back to the past and check out Wall Defender! The mission - you are defending the wall from attacking aliens. Don't let them hit as they make the wall weaker. This sounds simplistic and is, but highly addictive as you score points for every alien destroyed. If a segment of the outer wall is destroyed (by the aliens kamikaze into it) if this happens enough times the outer wall flashes and you need to move in a level, post haste. If you don't, you drift off to space and all is lost. Don't fret though you have a ch... [Read More] Make the first comment! |
We're Back!Posted on Fri, October 13 2006, by Gregory D. George |
So, did you wonder where TAT has been for the past few months? Well, I said a possible "revamp" was in the works! Now TAT is better and more interactive than ever before! Find out what has changed. (Oh, and the articles below are all NEW!) So you've been wondering, "What is going on with The Atari Times? Why haven't there been any updates for months?" Well, a couple of reasons... Firstly, I'm in the process of starting a new business, and that was eating at my time. So, naturally, TAT took a backseat until the uproar settled down. Secondly, I'm a pretty lazy guy. I like it when the computer does the work for me. (Isn't that why they w... [Read More] Make the first comment! |
Moon PatrolPosted on Thu, October 12 2006, by Ryan Genno |
Now here's an interesting game. One that's set in the future! Wait. You mean a lot of games are set in the future? Ok, sure. But how many of them have you driving your vehicle on the moon? I thought so. One of the reasons I like starting up my old Atari 2600 up again is to pop in Moon Patrol. This is a impressive yet quite challenging action/shooter game with it's unique parallax graphics, background music, and it's innovative game play that's still good even by today's standards. Imagine my excitement when I got the new 5200 version, uh!? Unfortunately this version had the chance to be the better game thanks the upgraded graphics and sounds but see why the g... Planet SmashersPosted on Mon, October 09 2006, by Brendan Onfrichuk |
Is this really the prequel to Alien Brigade? Some think it is. But really, these two games have absolutely nothing in common. Check out what it's all about. My experience with Planet Smashers has been rather average. From what I understand it is not a common title for the 7800 but regardlessly I obtained a copy for Christmas recently. It was the first game my brother and I played that Christmas. The Game plays like Xevious, Mission X, Raiden and other arcade games of that nature but it has much less personality than any of those titles. Instead it plays like an obvious copy with very few new ingredients and... [Read More] 3 Comments |
Profile Atarian: Brendan OnfrichukPosted on Wed, October 04 2006, by Brendan Onfrichuk |
You'll be seeing a lot of stuff from Brendan in the next few months. Might as well get acquainted with his Atari qualifications! Those were the words that spilled from my mouth when I opened up a large box labeled "video game" at my grandmother's house in the summer of 97. "Why thats your father's atari dear" said my grandmother. I new the name Atari but it had never really meant anything to me at the time. I did not know it at the time but it was a heavy sixer complete with those fancy CX-10 joysticks (you h... [Read More] 3 Comments |
Canyon BomberPosted on Sat, September 30 2006, by Darryl Brundage |
I'm sure you've heard of the Atari 2600 version of this game, but did you know it was an arcade conversion? A B&W one at that! Here's Darryl's take on this forgotten arcade game. I originally played this game a few times in the 70s, then when my mom got me and my sister a 2600 years later, that was the third game I got (although I got the Sears version, having the idiotic cover with the guy about to drop a bomb by hand from his airplane; say what?). I got to finally play this game again at a gaming expo in 2005 (since I wasn't about to do this by a nearly 20 year old memory when I could barely remember this original game anyway) and how it ... Name this GamePosted on Fri, September 22 2006, by Ethan C. Nobles |
Was this part of some kind of contest or something? Or did they finally run out of ideas for naming games? I'd think a game with a giant octopus would be easy to name... Name this game? Okay, I've got a few suggestions. How about "Monotony?" Then again, "Generic Video Game" is appropriate. Better yet, how about "Save Your Money?" Truth be told, this isn't a terrible video game. But, it sure as heck isn't a great one, either. Name this Game is just another run-of-the-mill title for the 2600. Nothing more and nothing less. You'll have some fun with it for a time, but it gets old in a hurry. Name this Game, re... [Read More] 3 Comments |
SeawolfPosted on Wed, June 21 2006, by Ethan C. Nobles |
Ya know... There are some games that make you wonder... Why didn't this game come out when the 2600 was in it's prime? I mean, really. The arcade game Sea Wolf was very popular back then. It was too bad we had to wait so long for such an excellent port. I've about decided that whenever Manuel Rotschkar puts together a game, it's safe to buy it. After all, he did a great job with both Gunfight and Star Fire, and Seawolf, released for the Atari 2600 in 2004, is another fantastic title. We Atari fans are lucky, indeed, to have people like Rotschkar out there writing quality homebrews for the 2600. Seawolf, according to the information on the game over at AtariAge.com, was Rotsch... Haunted HousePosted on Tue, June 13 2006, by Brendan Onfrichuk |
So is Tuesday the 13th an unlucky day? Or is that reserved for things like 06-06-06? Anyway, if you want to be scared, play this game (or look at my bank account.) Most people would say that Alone in the Dark was the world's first survival horror. I think that I would disagree because Haunted House came out way before that game. This was one of the first games in my 2600 collection and is still one of my favourites today. The idea of being scared by something that is only 4K in size may seem silly but it is far from the truth. So while you may think Resident Evil is the scariest game ever you be... Warring WormsPosted on Thu, June 01 2006, by Dan Loosen |
What do you get when you mix the game Sssnake with Combat? Warring Worms! Warring Worms has done it. It has officially become my favorite 2600 game. What is it? A simple knock-off of the snake game with some nice twists to make it the most intense multi-player experiences on the 2600. If you are wondering, yes, I think it is better than Combat. There are two worms, yourself and your opponent -- who can either be another human or the computer and precisely why I ended up liking this game more than Comb... [Read More] Make the first comment! |
