MEGAMANIA Review by 2009-09-29 10:10:17

--Guest--
The reviewer did not Know where MEGAMANIA came from.

It came from the arcade game, ASTRO BLASTER. I have this for MAME. It came out 2 years before MEGAMANIA.

In ASTRO BLASTER, Which also inspired THRESHOLD, there are 30 waves of strange objects,
everything from circles to birds to triangle shapes. Like MM, you must watch your fuel, though
you can refuel between waves by docking with a mothership.

Unlike MM, in AB you can "WARP", slow down the action, once per wave.

Also, there are SECRET BONUS POINTS for figuring out the correct firing pattern,
left to right, top to bottom, etc..

So now you know.

You're welcome,
Blufox@midcoast.com

Yes I did, actually. Check the date, that was written in 2003. I had since read it was influenced by Astro Blaster, which

Yeah I know, I always liked that game, I played it since it first came out in the arcades back when I was a kid.

I know that too, I have a book of How to Win at Video Games also during that time period (early 80s it was published), detailing all of the secret bonuses and all, several of which you can see on the Stage Select Astro Blaster page here.

Not that it was the earliest posting of the secrets or anything, but note the date being 2007 as to when those secrets were added to it's database entry. Yes, Darryl B., that's me again. I'm just not much into going back and making corrections in regards to video game stuff I've done, which I have them scattered all over the web. So that's why I just left it as it is...plus I didn't really think about it anyway. Six years is a long time anyhow...not that I like to make excuses for things like this, but that's how it is.

So now YOU know, as the intro was mostly a joke. The part that I didn't know where it came from was in regards to why everyday items was put into an odd shooter, since you didn't see much of that going around back then.

You're welcome,

Nothing to thank you for, really.

I'm very sorry, I apoligize. ) :

It was very presumptuous of me to post that.

Still, you should thank me for being ME, since I'm
such a WONDERFUL Alien being. Without me, you'd
all be dead you know!

Just kidding. HOWEVER, I did force you to respond and let
OTHER READERS know about the great old ASTRO BLASTER.

Also, the VCS THRESHOLD is a much closer and very fun game,
though I prefer the COLECOVISION version which includes 30 waves
and THE MOTHERSHIP sequence...when you fuel up it says "THANKS MA!"

But again, seriously, I'm very sorry. Take care,

Good OLD (very old) AlienBlue

Not much of a problem. I can understand how some of it sounds anyway (like the 'not knowing' part, as I thought it was pretty ingenious back then to make a game about household items ((or other things you wouldn't expect to be an enemy presence)) attacking for some reason, although that's been done many times since, like with Sheep Invaders and all). But yeah, I played the game back in the day, I actually played it again just a couple of years ago too at a local gaming expo. Good times

Ah well, I'm an admin on here, so I check these forums daily, even though there's not a lot of (alien ) activity...just comes with the territory...

Yeah I've been meaning to get a copy of that game forever now...I'm sure I'll run across it some day...

Heh, interesting. I know even less about that version as well, so thanks for posting that. Some of those obscure 3rd party companies that made stuff for the Coleco is hard to find nowadays. That'll be a tough one for me to track down, once I eventually get a Colecovision too (again, I've always wanted one...).
