You already know I'm stoked as hell Good look-alikes for a young McCoy, Kirk and Spock, $150 million budget, the Enterprise being built on Earth (I don't have a problem with it, unlike how it was built *originally*, since it helped Kirk realize upon looking at it what his destiny would be), Captain Pike finally getting some justice by being in it, FINALLY Romulans (one of THE original Trek villians, how come it took so long for them to get on the big screen? It only took 10 freakin' Star Trek movies before they did!), rave reviews at two premieres, etc., etc.

Thinking it's sounding very good, beam me aboard already!

The Romulans/Remans were the main villians in Nemesis...

I'm still not crazy about the look of the Enterprise or the bridge. Too "Apple-Store" for me.

And as you already know, there's no one who can top The Shat.

The word "reverence" is thrown around a lot in regards to this movie. Let's see just how reverent they are to the original timeline.

That's what I mean: it took 10 freakin' movies before they were the villians. I always thought that was a bit wrong.

My wife said she'd go after we saw the preview, so they must have done something right. Besides, it's a Star Trek movie. How bad can it be compared to the other bad ones? Compared to Enterprise? At worst, it will be no worse than the lows they have already reached.

Saw it, but I'm still iffy on whether I liked it or not. It just didn't feel right... Little things that I'll expand on later once most everyone has seen it.

Most of the cast was pretty good. But I thought the standout was Uhura.

I will say this: It was NOT better than Wrath of Khan. Not even close. Sure, the SFX were top-notch in comparison, but that movie was 27 years ago. Storywise it's not fit to carry Khan's jock. I'll even go so far as to say it wasn't as good as Voyage Home or even Undiscovered Country. And it didn't carry the same wondrous feeling that The Motion Picture did.

I give it a C+.

Really, why's that?

Got several e-mails from the H. A. A. G. group, all of them liking it quite a bit so far

Because she became a real character at last! I mean poor Nichelle did little more than say, "Hailing frequencies open Captain."

Oh ok, good point, nice to hear that. Not real surprising for me though, since, after all, they have Captain Pike in this one!

What I liked:

* Kirk eating the apple during the test. It was like in Star Trek II when he said, "I don't like to lose." Nice reverse book end there. (Although it was getting a bit over the top with his loud crunching.)
* Seeing Leonard Nimoy as the real Spock again.
* Uhura. I liked that they gave her more lines than "Hailing frequencies open Captain."
* Scotty & McCoy. I wish they had a larger roles. "Damn pointy eared hobgoblin!"
* The scene were Kirk is born and his father and mother are talking over the comm.

What I didn't like:

* The SFX were cool, but it was often hard to see what was going on with all that crap flying around.
* Illogical Vulcans. Um, is taunting an individual "logical?" Is dumping a cadet on an ice planet logical when there's a perfectly good brig aboard?
* Lens flare and shaky cam. Yeah, too much of it, thanks.
* Story plot holes. There are a lot of them, but the one that stands out to me is the security officer still referring to Kirk as "cupcake." Seems to me they changed the story somewhere and forgot about that pesky "Three Years Later" thing.
* How each character replaces another in such a quick time. Uhura replaces some other comm officer. Spock replaces Pike. Kirk replaces Spock. Scotty replaces whoever is in charge of engineering.
* I wish they had explained why the Enterprise was being built on earth and how it got into space.
* How many times will Kirk hang from a cliff? I counted at least three times.

The design of the Enterprise doesn't bother me as much now since I feel it will still end up like the original movie version anyway. Sadly, the ship itself takes the rumble seat to much of the whizzbangery and action.

Anyway, despite my picking nits, it was an okay movie.

Probably the first one was in regards to Kirk gazing at it and figuring he had to get his act together, I'd think. As far as the latter, the Enterprise had always been able to land on and take off from a planet, it was just never shown, due to the tiny budget NBC gave it when it originated (imagine how the special effects would look like then...snirk). The whole 'landing a huge starship on a planet' deal didn't start with Voyager!

So, Starfleet decided to build the ship on earth, just so Kirk would want to join up? Seems a bit extreme if you ask me.

I don't think that's entirely true. In Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise it mentions how the saucer can separate for planetfall, but that the secondary hull isn't capable of landing. And looking at the design of Enterprise Reboot, I'd say that's still true. Looks like it would tip over if it landed! Unlike Voyager which was designed to land from the get-go.

Well, I've got a cd where you can walk the bridges of five of Starfleet's ships, and there's something on every one that gives background info to the ships and it mentions that on the original Enterprise.

I don't recall the names of the people invovled in making the game but they're definitely Trek people and have been involved in various Trek guides, tech stuff and all. So I'm pretty sure they know their stuff.

Just got back from a Disney cruise... They had Star Trek running for free on the television and I watched it nearly every time we were in the stateroom. My opinion of it has gone down with each watching. There are so many problems with this movie it's actually starting to make me feel sick...

I thought it sucked. JJ Abrams should be stood up against a wall and shot with phasers set on disintegrate. I downloaded it off bit torrent a few days before it opened and I'm glad I didn't pay good money to watch that crap. I deleted it right away because I couldn't even stand to have it polluting my hard drive.

Saw this thread a moment ago and remembered my rather lengthy nitpick of this awful movie (and yes, my opinion has gone WAAAAY down since it came out.) I wrote these thoughts as I watched the movie, so they're in chronological order. Here you go:

Space... the Rehashed Frontier. These are the voyages of the gaudy-looking starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: To explore new revenue streams and alienate longtime fans, to shine lens flare wildly for 2 hours, to repeatedly go where we've all been before.

1. A black hole is not a time portal. And if it were, it wouldn't go back exactly where a traveler would want it to. Nor would it change the events that came BEFORE the travelers arrive.

2. A captain would not willingly go to another ship. Alone. (First example of someone filling in for another. George Kirk.) Remember TNG when Riker talked with Picard about this.

3. The engine room would not look like a beer factory.

4. A romulan mining ship would not have more weapons than an entire fleet of warbirds. It's so powerful, the Romulans could have just used this mining ship to defeat the Federation! (This was explained in the comics, but are they canon?)

5. Because this is Star Trek, the Federation ships would not be beat up looking. Roddenberry repeatedly said the Federation ships were to be clean and perfect. This wasn't some arbitrary fancy. It was done to show that the future would be better than the present.

6. In the future the problem of lens flare will not yet be solved.

7. There are no canyons in Iowa, although I'm sure someone will say it's a quarry (with no machines around I might add.)

8. Young Kirk hangs from the cliff. It's a reoccurring theme for him in this movie.

9. It is not logical for a logical species to taunt Spock as a kid. Racism (specisism?) is not logical.

10. A thriving bar would not be in the middle of an Iowa cornfield.

11. Spaceships as large as the Enterprise would not be built on the ground (or in Iowa) they're built in space. FOR A REASON!

12. McCoy is not called "Bones" because that's all he got left in the divorce. It was because doctors are often called "Sawbones."

13. 3 Years later and Kirk is still trying to get Uhura's first name. Hmm... Seems like an editing problem.

14. McCoy would not be helmsman during a training exercise, he's a Doctor dammit, not a driver.

15. Ship assignments wouldn't be handed out like trinkets. Everyone would have had their assignments in advance.

16. Sulu is the second person filling in for someone else.

17. Technobabble survives when Spock says, "Have you disabled the primary inertial dampener?"

18. Slapstick comedy a la Jar Jar Binks with Kirk's swollen hands. Holy crap...

19. Uhura is the third person filling in for someone else.

20. I repeat, a captain would not leave his ship alone as Pike does.

19. Spock is the fourth person filling in for someone else.

20. McCoy is the fifth person filling in for someone else.

21. Kirk hangs a second time from the drilling platform.

22. Destruction of the planet Vulcan is a huge no-no in Trekdom. This will need to be repaired at some point (hopefully when they set the timeline back as it belongs.)

23. Nero calls his ship a simple mining vessel. Looks pretty big and complex to me!

24. Amazing that a rogue like Nero was able to "accidentally" do what no other, far better equipped, group could do. The Borg, the Klingons, the Romulan Empire, the Dominion, the Cardassians, and countless others have been trying to destroy Vulcan and/or the Federation for centuries. Surprised none of the others thought to go back in time to do it! (Ok, well the Borg did, but failed.)

25. Some originality! They copied the ear slug scene from Star Trek II.

26. It's illogical to abandon Kirk on an ice planet.

27. If you believe in evolution, a hairless creature on an ice planet is ridiculous.

28. Amazing co-incidence that young Kirk meets old Spock on the ice planet! Nero and young Spock had the same idea! Wow!

29. Romulus destroyed is another Trekkie no-no. (So now two of the four major planets in Trekdom are gone. All that's left is Earth and the Klingon homeworld!) Talk about limiting your future storylines!

30. Amazing co-incidence that young Kirk and old Spock meet Scotty on the ice planet!

31. Even the technobabble of "transwarp beaming" would not work if the Shuttle wasn't even in space with the Enterprise light years away!!

32. 3 years later and the security guard still calls Kirk "cupcake!" That's just amazing! (Seems to me they threw in the 3 years thing as an after thought.) Funny that the scars on Kirk's face on the bridge MATCH EXACTLY to the scars he got three years back too! (Except that he doesn't have them in the engine room water tube scene!)

33. Kirk is the sixth person filling in for someone else.

34. Spock admits there's a regulation about Captains leaving the ship. Yet Pike and the other captain freely ignore it.

35. Saturn and earth are 823 million miles apart, yet they make it seem like the Enterprise sneaks in behind Nero. Since the speed of light is about 186,282 miles per second, it would take the Enterprise over an hour to reach earth at Warp 1 (the speed of light.) I didn't see the Enterprise go to warp to sneak behind Nero, did you? Hey, at least they got the name of Saturn's moon correct! It really is Titan! Here's a pat of the back for you, J.J.!

36. Kirk hangs from another cliff in Nero's ship! What another coincidence!!

37. Isn't Nero's ship pretty close to earth when Spock crashes the red matter ship into it? Wouldn't you think a black hole made with that much red matter would have sucked Earth into it too?

38. How come sometimes the Red Matter becomes a relatively benign time portal, but on the other hand it is destructive? Nero could go through it one time, but not the other?

39. If it truly were a black hole, there's no way the Enterprise could have escaped it.

40. Wouldn't the explosion from that much anti-matter have destroyed Earth too?

41. A 3-year cadet would never become Captain without "paying his dues" and going through several other ranks.

42. It's "I stand relieved" not "I am relieved" as Pike said.
