Now it's the 7800's turn to show off. Check how the 7800's arcade conversions compare to the original arcade games!

Pac-Man

Posted on Sun, March 25 2007, by Colin Hodder
Before the great Pac-Man Collection hack was released, we had this great individual hack turning Ms. Pac-Man into Pac-Man. You can still get this version in the Collection, but here's the rundown of the original hack...

When most people think of Pac-Man and Atari, they think of the terrible 2600 version of the arcade classic. Most people don't think of it as "the terrible 2600 version" however, as most people, meaning average people, think that the 2600 version was the best Atari could do with the 2600 hardware. Us people in the know are aware that that is a crock, as proven by Ms. Pac-Man and numerous hacks over the years. In any case, outside of that one game, Ata...

River Raid II

Posted on Mon, March 19 2007, by Brendan Onfrichuk
As the sequel to one of the most popular 2600 games ever, how would this one fare? No longer content with a left- right- avoid- the- baddies- and- shoot- the- bridge simple game, River Raid II enters the realm of complexity and frustration.

I have a secret that very few know. I do not own a copy of River Raid (I can hear your gasps from here). But before you throwing stuff at your computer monitor in a fit of rage and start sending me hate mail I would just like to say that I do own a copy of River Raid II. It is kinda odd that instead of coming across the more common original I would trip over it's less common brother but it is a strange world we live in. River Raid II is one of Ac...

Arcade to Lynx

Posted on Mon, March 12 2007, by Gregory D. George
It's baaack! I've been holding on to these "Arcade to Atari" pages for awhile. So here's the first to return. Check out these comparisons between the arcade version and the Lynx versions! (Warning! Graphics heavy!)

Ya know, I always thought the Lynx did a spectacular job of replicating it's arcade conversions. But when you take a look at them side-by-side, you can see just how great the Lynx conversions are! Ok, there is some detail missing in games like Ninja Gaiden but otherwise, the Lynx is amazing! ...

Sky Diver

Posted on Mon, March 05 2007, by Darryl Brundage
For those of you looking to replicate the thrill of actual sky diving... well, you'll be rather disappointed with this game. But if you're looking to prove your skills as a sky diver... well, this probably won't work either. Anyway, at least Atari was trying to come up with new ideas!

Scene: an airplane high in the air, filled with people with standard sky diving equipment on, standing (or sitting) by that ominous open door, ready for people to jump for the ultimate thrill of their entire life...or a fairly quick death. Instructor: SO! Is everyone READ-AY for the ultimate thrill of their LIVES? (Told ya!) Everyone: (mumbles incoherently) Instructor (clapping nearest guy on shoulder): How about ...

Caverns of Mars

Posted on Mon, February 26 2007, by Lawrence Armstrong
For a game that started on the Atari Program Exchange, Caverns of Mars has really made a name for itself. It was even featured as a 2600 version on the Flashback 2! See where it all started on the 8-bit!

To commemorate the release of the Flashback 2, I've decided to review the original Caverns of Mars game for the 400/800 series. The Flashback 2, which is scheduled for a national release in a few days as of this writing, includes a built in Caverns of Mars game. This is a remake of the game that first appeared on the 400/800 over 20 years ago. It is a simple, but solid game. The graphics in Caverns of Mars are the most basic you'l...

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story

Posted on Sun, February 18 2007, by Bruce Clarke
Not exactly the top of the heap when it comes to fighting games, at least it isn't DOUBLE Dragon 5! The good thing about Dragon is that you can compare it with the Genesis and SNES versions. Naturally, the Jaguar version is the best.

Do you remember that Bruce Lee game for the Atari 8-bit computers? That was a great game, man! Hey, do you like 2D streetfighter-style games? Yeah? Well, imagine if you made a videogame about a real-life fighter. How about if that fighter was one of the greatest martial arts masters in modern times? And how about if he was Bruce freaking Lee? Man, you'd think that have to be a pretty damn good game. Oh, but wait, this is for the Atari Jaguar... Th...

Double Dragon

Posted on Sun, February 11 2007, by Brendan Onfrichuk
Who would have guessed that Double Dragon would ever be ported to the 2600! Well, see if it's something worth playing or if Abobo should smash it to bits.

Yes, you heard me correctly. Double Dragon got a release on the Atari 2600. Like most people, I played Double Dragon for hours on end with my brother. What is there to hate about a game that transformed the two of us into buff vigilantes with a score to settle. We would walk down the streets of the game with a wooden bat in hand and blood stained jackets. Because most kids enjoyed playing this very popular game in the arcades corporate stooges would cas...

Atari and the Vectrex

Posted on Sat, February 03 2007, by Darryl Brundage
Darryl just keeps on making me jealous because I don't have a Vectrex. Check out this run down of Atari games converted to the Vectrex, including some excellent homebrews!

(Note before starting this feature: I'm probably the least technically-minded person that's involved with TAT, which, as I'll explain later, may lead to inaccuracies with this piece, even though a lot of this is just wishful thinking. So keep that in mind as you read on...) ...

Pitfall!

Posted on Mon, January 29 2007, by Ryan Genno
Activision didn't really spruce up their 5200 versions all that much. Maybe it's because they had already pushed the 2600 as far as it could go? Anyway, here's Ryan's take on the Activision classic.

Pitfall! was one of those landmark games for the Atari 2600. It broke new ground for action and adventure back in the early eighties and it really helped the new company Activision get on the map. Imagine a cross between Nintendo's Donkey Kong and Atari's Adventure and you get David Crane's legendary Pitfall! Although the game was great on the 2600, the 5200 version is surprisingly weak and barely enhanced. The game play is simp...
