Ms. Pac-Man - The Atari Times

Ms. Pac-Man

Sophomore SURPASSING!
by Darryl Brundage

January 27, 2005
Pac-Man was one of the hugest video games ever.

Then the female version of this Pac-Person came out, expanding on the original's gameplay, then, years after it was released, you could still find versions in arcades having a "turbo" character that went around the mazes real fast, and THEN years after THAT it was re-released as a Namco Class of '81 console (along with Galaga; has it been THAT long already? Wow, I'm feelin' old...)

I would say I'll bet Pac-Man is either proud or jealous of his old lady, but if I ever get to the point where my life has become so pathetic that I'm coming up with scenarios about video game characters like they're real people, someone please shoot me, ok?

In the original, you, as Pac-Man, cleared screens by eating dots and an occasional bonus prize while being chased by ghosts (oh yeah, the above elements *really* make total sense). However, eat an energizer in one of a maze's corners, and you will be able to eat the ghosts for a short period of time (yet they seem to escape from your stomach every time and rematerialize; yeah, more sense
there).

In this sequel, though, it really improved the original formula in leaps and bounds.

Screens change often; you no longer had just the one boring maze to contend with. You really had to earn the eating of bonus prizes this time, as they would bounce around the maze (and that's another point that makes no sense to me: if my food's MOVING, I'm staying the heck away from it!! The only good food to me is DEAD food!), which you would have to chase them down most of the time. You also got a hint of yet another upcoming Pac sequel as well, due to one of the cinematic breaks, which showed a Junior Pac-Man (man, Mr. and Ms. Pac-Man didn't waste any time in that department!).

Actually, there isn't really much of a review to do after just explaining the game, since the 7800 version plays a lot like the arcade version. The controls are good, as are the graphics in comparison, the sounds are sufficient (nothing huge to them or anything, but they work), and you get some intermissions too. You also get the choice of starting a game from one of the later levels as well, if you want. What else can I say, except to pick up this lady if you haven't already.

"I am woman, hear me roar!" Indeed, especially with her huge success.

I'm more than Pac-Man with a bow!
Screen 1 is a girly looking maze, isn't it?
Screen 2 is too pastel for my taste.
Screen 3 has several trap areas to avoid.

You never posted my comment from last week. I guess you don't like the name Harry Crumb. I come from a long line of crumbs.

There's been more than one comment that didn't go up, so you're not alone. Could be a glitch, sorry.

It's very difficult to get to the 4th maze. Those ghosts move real fast on maze 3.

Of course the graphics seem blocky compared to the arcade version but the gameplay is what makes this awesome.
