Zool 2 - The Atari Times

Zool 2

Jump into the Nth dimension!
by Dan Loosen

November 8, 2004
There are not a lot of people who truly like Zool 2 for the Jaguar.  They site a variety of problems from sloppy control to an overly fast-paced speed and on and on.  Personally, I am one of the people that love Zool 2 and I don't understand where everyone else is coming from.

I've never been drawn into the Sonic series because I don't find it challenging at all.  You have all that speed, but it takes a lot of stupid moves before you end up dead and having to restart.  The speed didn't appeal without a tough challenge to go with it.  Enter Zool 2...  and my idea of a fast-paced game with a serious challenge has arrived.

Zool 2 is fast.  Everything about this game tells you to move at warp speed throughout the whole thing...  except you need to get a bunch of pieces of candy before the end boss will come out to challenge you.  This means that you have to manage your speed, and gives you quite the challenge as you speed along way to face the evil Mental Block.

The graphics are cute, and the game features Chupa Chups.  Yes, that is correct, those awesome suckers have made their way into this game.  But I digress, the graphics...  The graphics look great, and the Jaguar handles them about as good as could be expected.  Once in a while, the game suffers from slowdown when there is stuff flying everywhere but it doesn't hurt the game at all.  In fact, I like the slowdown because it calms the game down sufficiently so I can figure out what is going on again.

The music is perfect.  Yes, this game has what I consider to be an absolutely flawless soundtrack.  There were times that I would turn on my Jaguar, throw in Zool 2 and sit down and do something else just to listen to the tunes.  The sounds aren't quite as perfect, and they actually are almost a little too "cute."  They get very repetitive after a short period, but you are stuck with the same sounds the whole game.

The control... A lot of people complain that this game allows you to jump with the D-pad, but I don't understand the problem.  Yes, once in a while you accidentally hop from hitting the up arrow on accident, but I have never had this seriously impact a game.  In fact, I like the layout because I can keep one hand shooting and if I see something about to hit me, I can hop without having to try to hit two buttons at once to shoot at my assailants.

Grab this game and jump into the Nth dimension, and join Zool in his race to save your imagination You won't regret it!

Radical Ninja!
I've never seen so many collectible items in a game before!

A must have for any Jag enthusiast by Guitarman on 2007-03-16 11:16:56
I agree with the rating of an overall 95% because from the moment that I first popped this into my Jaguar and actually played it I was pleased. The controls are very responsive, the music is awesome and the difficulty of the game keeps me going back for more. This title deserves a better vote from the public!
Zool can save the world! by Nathan on 2007-04-13 20:11:17
Zool is now one of my favorite videogame charachters of all time. Who would have though a Ninja Ant could be so fun. I actaully like Zool better than Sonic if that says anything. I wish they would have made a Zool 3!
This is what the Jaguar needed! by Fsporsche on 2008-10-01 08:46:45
This game rocks!!!!Its fun, great graphics, music and I could not put it down. This is the kind of games the jaguar needed, like (sonic). I believe if their should be a mascot it should of been zool...Too bad no other sequals were made for the Jaguar64, I would of loved to see more of zool!
This game does not rock by Matthew on 2014-05-15 17:38:25
I have to disagree with the review and everyone I really don't like this game because you have to collect 99 peices of whatever those collectable things are before you are allowed to complete the level and this is quite annoying in some levels where you can't return to earlier parts of the stage so through bad level design you can actually get stuck.
